My article will be targeted towards people who read the Guardian.
Does your accent determine who you are as a person? And are accents changing?
There is a huge range of different accents and dialects throughout the United Kingdom which can be analysed by the public as the best and the absolutely terrible. In my opinion and many others the accent from a person is something unique to them and it is something to be proud of but that is not always peoples views.
In the 1970's a matched guise test was done to collect the views of people on accents in the UK. The test recorded what they saw as the most impressive and influential accent being said. The outcome was that the Brummie accent was seen as the least impressive and had little influence on people being talked about a certain subject. On the other hand at the top of the leader board was the received pronunciation. Even though this was done over 40 years ago this view is still among people today and can be supported by many recent surveys in the United Kingdom.
The surveys record various views on how intelligent or friendly an accent is to name a few. The fact that people will quickly judge someone as soon as they open their mouth on who they are personally is complete nonsense in my opinion. I mean just because your from Birmingham and have a very strong accent does that mean you are not intelligent enough to get a high grade in education? obviously not. So why do people instantly judge without actually finding out about the person first?
We are judged in a variety of ways for the way we speak. In the past it was very easy to separate people into by listening to their accent but now due to how easy it is to travel around the world and the many people moving to various places to work and learn it does not become as a surprise that we are all becoming more similar in how we speak and it is more difficult now than ever to determine where someone is from as soon as they open their mouth. Nowadays when you hear a very strong accent it is usually the older generation who are holding on to their pride when they speak but soon i feel to many accents will mix and the UK will eventually start sounding similar altogether as people are not as bothered on keeping a designated accent and are repeatedly moving areas.

Giles 1970's matched guise technique research 01/12/15
Giles matched-guise technique
The Matched-Guise Test is a sociolinguistic experimental technique used to determine the true feelings of
an individual or community towards a specific language, dialect, or accent.
The experimental
procedure revolves around a variety of different people who acted as judges
listening to different accents and regional dialects and evaluating their
personal qualities solely based on their voices. The topic they talked about
was capital punishment and the arguments were completely identical and the
judges replied with how influential the different accents made their arguments and
ranked each of them.
Oddly during the
experiment the different accents were done by one person and the judges did not
know that it was only one but a range of different people from various areas.
The test was done without seeing the person which meant the only difference was
the speech but the tone and pitch would sound the same. This meant there was
nothing affecting the results and the way of speaking would be exactly the same
and the accent was the only thing being focused on.
Findings
Those
who heard RP were most impressed, those who heard Birmingham were least impressed.
Other findings-those
who heard regional accents were more likely to have changed their minds after
the presentation.
Limitation
One
limitation was that the judges may find out that there was only one person
performing the various accents which could lead them to having different
accents and make the results less reliable.
The
information found also matches what people still think now. This is found in a
recent 2014 survey which showed the people of the UK thought the Brummie accent
was the least attractive and scored -53
on the survey which shows there is little difference in what Giles found to
what people still think today.

Jennifer Lawrence analysis
What are the important contextual features of this text?
The very well known company Sony were on the receiving end of a hacking scandal which resulted in leaked information. Among the information leaked was figures of money that individual film stars earned in the film 'American Hustle'. By viewing the earnings it was easy to see that the very famous actress Jennifer Lawrence had earned considerably less money than her male colleagues that she filmed with. This sparked outrage between the people who saw this leak but also Jennifer Lawrence herself and this controversial issue led to the star posting her views on Facebook about this particular subject. Because of her reply and peoples great interest in this issue it has came to no surprise that this became one of the most talked about topics about gender equality in recent years.
Comment on the 'male' and 'female' language features in this text. What is the effect on the reader?
Jennifer Lawrence supports and contradicts the theory of Robin Lakoffs theory that men and women speak differently throughout her response. This is because she uses both female and male language and by her using male language shows that women talk the same as men also. The first paragraph shows Jennifer noticeably speaking in a 'female' way. There is a tense feeling as she starts and she uses phrase "fingers crossed'' this may suggest that she cares about her fans and is speaking to them like they are together as a unit. It could also be seen as her showing her feelings towards her fans or anyone else viewing this to feel a type of emotion towards her views. The emotion created supports Lakoffs theory that women are more emotional than men. Jennifer also shows she cares what people think of her. "I didn't want to seem difficult" could be identified to be a weakness in her personality and also supports the stereotype that women would rather please everyone, This suggests that females do talk differently than men because it is seen that men do not care as much as women in what they say and they don't mind if people disagree.
Jennifer Lawrence also contradicts the theory of Lakoffs in a variety of ways. As you get further in the post it becomes less clear to what gender is actually writing this if you had not already seen it was Jennifer Lawrence. It could be interpreted to be a males Facebook post because of the strong language and tone used. The phrase 'Fuck that' may show she is angered by the situation but also she doesn't really care about offending anyone which is a totally different way of expressing herself than i the first paragraph. She is seen to use swear words a few times in the post which is seen as odd. The reason i say this is because words like 'fuck' are usually assumed to be used more by the male gender. This why Jennifer Lawrence contradicts Lakoffs views.
Do you agree with her conclusion?
I do agree with her conclusion. I believe is true that men can use their dominant language to negotiate deals that they want and women step back as they don't want to make unneeded controversy. Woman can be portrayed wrongly if they acted like men during negotiable situations which i feel is a big problem today which is why i agree greatly with Jennifer Lawrence's ideas and overall conclusion.

Dialect article
Are dialects changing?
If you look at the countries across the world it is easy to recognize that the United Kingdom is a small country in comparison to the others. Because of this people who haven't visited could be easily persuaded to follow the thought everyone speaks and sounds similar, but this is definitely not the case!
The reason for this is the endless variety of different dialects found in the country. A dialect is a language variety belonging to different regional groups. People who have not visited the UK could just think we all sound the same because of its size but instead we have an extreme amount of different dialects.
The endless amounts of dialects is surprising but its not slowing down any time soon. Because of the ways of travelling is now so simple and easy with the different variety of travel in the world more dialects will soon be put upon new people. Another reason for this is because the amount of people leaving their original birth place to get a new job or study at universities across the country. By doing this it is more likely that they will need to adapt to their new area which is likely to me their dialect will also change.
Dialects can also be split into different categories. There is geographical dialect which means the way you talk is effected by the location you live in. Another type of dialect is Social dialect. This is how you talk depending on the class and/or people you are surrounded by.
Some of the most recognizable dialects in the UK are ones like Cockney,Bristolian,Geordie and Brummie. Even though this is just four of the countless amount the UK has on offer they all have a unique way of portraying the English language. The continuation of dialect and accent mixing between cities and countries means are way of communication will become more and more diverse each day.

Transcript analysis
Courtroom transcript analysis
1) What do you
notice about the use of proper and/or pronouns in referring to people and
events?
What I notice about the
transcript is proper nouns are almost always used when the barrister is
addressing both of the men involved in the situation. The reason for this is to
make it completely clear to themselves and the audience in the courtroom who is
being talked about. If they were to use pronouns like he, she and they rather
than proper nouns it could create confusion with the listeners. I also feel
that although the barrister is the one with the authority he feels it is part
of his job to respect the defendant which is why he addresses him with in a
formal way with ‘Mr Neil’. The defendant also uses pronouns when referring to
the police as ‘em’ which is a shortened version of them. It is a feature of
spoken language because when writing you would not use the term ‘em’. It also
is showing he either has a strong Scottish accent and these abbreviations come
natural to him, but also that he’s not too bothered with talking formally to
the barrister.
2) Which parts of
the dialogue seem prepared or part of courtroom conventions and which seem
spontaneous (said without thinking beforehand)?
Throughout the transcript most of what the barrister says
seems to be part of the normal courtroom procedures. The first introduction to the case from the Barrister
is what you would class as a normal courtroom speech. One spontaneous and
abnormal part of the transcript that stands out is ‘is that because the police
have been to see you so many times Mr Neil that you can’t remember what they were up to see you about one
incident as compared to another incident?’ This is abnormal because the
barrister is basically insulting rather than being professional like he should
be. Other than this he does act in a normal way throughout the courtroom
incident.
3) Who seems to
have the most power in the in the dialogue and why?
The person with the power in the dialogue is the barrister.
The first reason why I think this is he controls the conversation and it is
obvious to see how much more he speaks than the defendant. The lack of speech from the defendant indicates he does not have much power and he is controlled by the barrister.
Another way that shows Mr Neil is not the man in authority is his constant pauses and use of 'ers' and 'ems' it makes me feel like he is constantly thinking or nervous. I get the feeling that Mr Neil is thinking of what to say and is constantly thinking what he should say which indicates suspicion on his behalf. This is especially the case because he is in a courtroom getting questioned and if your not seen as confident then it could alert suspicion to the barrister and the audience. The fact that the barrister is high in authority and the audience is there to analyse and make thoughts on the defendant which shows Mr Neil is under power.
At other parts of the transcript you can see how Mr Neil tries to cross the barristers authority by speaking over him.
barrister-you cant remember whether they came to /see or not/
Mr N- / I don't /think they did no.
Although people may see talking over someone as trying to be in power i think Mr Neil goes through the realization that he cant say anything else so he bluntly responds to the barrister because he has nothing else to say. He does this again at the end of the transcript where he says 'no' over the top of the barrister which also supports the fact he knows he has nothing else to say so he is blunt. The fact he says little when speaking over the barrister shows the lack of authority because he doesn't have big persuasive responses but instead short blunt ones.

two blogs analysis commentary on abortion
Analysis Commentary
on the two bloggers on Abortion
I
have chosen to speak about the controversy behind abortion and although i share
personal views, I have created two characters that are looking to express their
feelings on Abortion and I will analyse both. They are both unknown members of
the public who are blogging for the first time about their feelings on the
controversy surrounding abortion. The form of the two blogs is a persuasive
article in a section of a local newspaper. The audience that these views are
received by is people who have purchased the newspaper and viewed the pages
where these blogs on abortion controversy are.
The
first character Lucy is a 20 year old woman who is looking to express her
feelings on abortion and explains how she has actually experienced the full
force of an abortion as a sixteen year old girl. The other character is a 47
year old called John Staples whose profession is being a doctor.
As
soon as both bloggers start it becomes obvious who is more comfortable and used
to writing in this manner. John Staples seems more sophisticated and
comfortable with the use of vocabulary being used. Lucy on the other hand does
not come across as completely less confident but less comfortable than John.
Because of the fact John is a doctor he does seem quite fair at the start of
the blog saying his view could be disagreed with the fact it’s okay if the
women 'health is at risk' which is clearly understandable as
his profession means he thinks safety is the most important thing. The use of
vocabulary and the fact all of his blog makes sense, gives me the view that
John is higher academically than Lucy which is also supported by the fact he’s
a doctor. Because of the high level of grammar and punctuation Johns view seems
very persuasive and I think if I was to read this I would be drawn to Johns view
because of how he expresses the religious and health views which he is very
educated about which would draw me to believe him more. A very interesting statement John uses is 'its only a matter of time abortion could become illegal' the cliche being used means he thinks eventually abortion will become illegal. This is a strong view and because he is putting an opinion across without care it shows his beliefs are firm and because of his views and others that agree with him are right then its only a 'matter of time' others see this and it will become illegal.
I
am now going to analyse Lucy's blog next. Lucy's blog is written more
informally than Johns and I see a lack of successful use of punctuation in her
blog. Although above I have stated that i was drawn to Johns view more the fact
that Lucy has the experience of going through an abortion it helps her explain
her views because she has been through it not only physically but had to deal
with the controversy mentally. Because of this I can see why an audience may be
drawn to Lucy's view because its fact and the audience could feel an emotional
connection. She does show some good punctuation also. 'Abortion is murder' is it
really? If abortion is killing someone then why did I not get a jail sentence? The fact she uses rhetorical questions
shows she does know some good ways of persuasion and punctuation but in my
opinion it is overused which supports the fact John understands the use of
words more and what is best to do when expressing personal views. Lucy does
write in continuous pros as does John so it shows both have an understanding on
formatting their writing, yet because Lucy's
doesn’t seem to have the same academic level as Johns it becomes
irrelevant.
I
feel the primary purpose of John’s blog is to express his beliefs about
abortion and is looking to persuade his audience that his view is right and
should be accepted. This is the same as Lucy's primary purpose but she also
intends to share more of a personal experience with her audience as well as
expressing why discrimination to females having an abortion is wrong and how
she dealt with this as a 16 year old girl so she does show more of a personal
view than a knowledgeable one.

Abortion controversy
Abortion views for a newspaper article
I have chosen to speak about the controversy within abortion. I do have my own views about abortion but have chose to express two views about abortion through two characters. The first character is a young woman who has been through an abortion and what the experience feels like. She had an abortion and still believes her decision was the correct one and proceeds to explain why abortion should be allowed and not sinned upon.
The other character is a more mature man who has the profession as a doctor. Although he feels very strong about his opinion he also has to accept that their are some reasons why it should be done. His job means he needs to help the abortion process to take place and he feels its awkward because he feels so strongly about the fact abortion should not be allowed because of his religious views and his personal views.
Below are the two bloggers and they have wrote into a local paper to put across their personal views and experiences on the controversy of abortion.
Audience is newspaper readers.
Blogger one- I am a 20 year old woman who has experienced the full force of the choices of an abortion. At the age of 16 i had an abortion and still from that day i stick by the fact it should have been done and i think others should not be frowned upon for their decisions.
The reason for my abortion was because i was at a very young age and i felt like it would be a huge struggle for myself to look after a baby. The main statement i had to deal with by a range of people was 'It was your fault, you need to live with it' my answer to this was why? As a sixteen year old i did not make any money and knew it was impossible to look after a child by myself. I realize i was stupid and did not consider the high risk of becoming pregnant whilst unprotected.
The reason for my view does not just come from my experience but also a range of other factors. Shouldn't a woman have full responsibility for her own body? As a society that is equal i feel like a woman having an abortion should be completely up to her and not be faced with discrimination for her actions.
Many people have the view usually religious that sex should not be between two people without the intention to make a child. Why cant we be free? If we have choice and abortion is NOT illegal then why is it still seen as a crime to many people. Its completely insane! Do you not think a girl is going through enough already with the choice they are making?why make her feel even worse.
I can see from some peoples eyes that it is wrong but my strongest view is that like me if you cannot give a child the best upbringing possible then the most loving thing to do is end its life before it has began. This brings me to my next point when people claim it is murder.
'Abortion is murder' is it really? If abortion is killing someone then why did i not get a jail sentence?
Its clear stupidity to say its murder. My opinion is that when the baby has left the whom then it is human so before this happens when its a fetus its not a human being so this means you are not ending living human beings life.
Thanks for listening to my view, Lucy Watts (20)
Blogger two- My name is Dr. John Staples and i am writing to express my feelings on abortion. I am an experienced doctor who has done countless abortions in my past experiences.
My main view is that Abortion should be illegal. As a doctor i do see why in some circumstances abortion should be allowed. First i will express why it could be okay to have an abortion. If the woman's health is at risk then i believe an abortion is the right thing to do.
My doctor personality will not be relevant for any of my next views. It drives me crazy the fact a woman has the cheek to say 'its my body i can do what i want' yes i agree with it but the fact you have used your body to have sexual intercourse without protection and your fully aware with the risk of this you should be made to pay for it.
I also am one of the many others who feel that abortion is murder. I mean how isn't it? as soon as the sperm is inserted into the egg then the human process has began. As a doctor i am aware of how quickly a fetus develops inside the whom and if you look at it, it is obvious to see how similar it is to a baby. Their is no difference to a 1 day old baby and a highly developed baby in the whom but if you killed a living child then you would be sentenced to jail so why aren't people who have no relevant reasons for an abortion sentenced for murder?
Not only am i a doctor but i also am a christian and my view is that sexual intercourse should only happen if the couple is married and are intending to make a new life, so i see abortion as not only murder but i also feel its a sin.
With my view being shared and i know many others feel the same way about abortion I believe that its only a matter of time abortion could start to become illegal in the UK and if others speak up about this situation we could ban this absolute disgraceful action.
Thanks for listening to my view Dr. John staples (47)

Two articles analysis
The two articles i have chose are from BBC sport and the guardian and they are about the Rugby world cup game played by England and Wales.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/rugby-union/34376488
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2015/sep/28/england-wales-rugby-world-cup-2015
After reading both articles it has came to my view that they have both differences and similarities.
The guardians article went into more detail on the devastating loss for England with a step by step analysis of the game. On the other hand BBC's article was much more summarized and even though it gave all the core information (which is the most important thing) the guardian went into a lot more depth.
The language from the guardian is much more complexed and the layout is in paragraphs with a lot of text. The BBC article is different to this because it is set out in small paragraphs (usually 3 lines) with information focused on highlights of the match, quotes or facts about the game or what is likely to happen in the future. The article is also field with pictures and diagrams of players or match statistics, which are shown by charts and World cup related features like the group tables.
The BBC also focus on key players and features of the game, where as the guardian cover almost everything happening.
At the end of the article the guardian summarizes the previous information, where as because BBC is full of summarizing they just end the article pretty briefly.
In my opinion if you are looking for a long detailed description on the game i would look on the guardian for an article or even if you have missed the game you could read this and gain a lot of information. Where as if you have seen the game BBC sport is good as a reminder or to see quick summarized analysis or statistics.

How English Language has changed overtime
It is no doubt that the use of slang and abbreviation is at its peak in the world of social media, so it comes as a surprise that phrases that were used most often by teens and adults are considered to be out dated by the younger generation. The acronym for 'laugh out load', 'LOL' which was once used by every generation has now been described by teens to 'have had its day' and are most likely to use 'haha' or a emoji representing laughing. In a recent survey 54% used 'haha' followed by 33.7% admitting they would use the laughing emoji.

Evaluation
I feel i have expressed my views well with good facts to back up my ideas. The way i have got straight to the point without confusion i feel went well.
The improvements needed in this work, which would have been done with more time would be to use more formal and intelligent language so the audience for my article are drawn in an can see my point of view expressed fully.
